This is a fun little book, with all sorts of facts and trivia about cows thrown in to a true type 'field guide' to cows. It really does make driving through the country much more fun, as I now want to stop and see if I can figure out what kid of cow I'm looking at. And my friends (vegetarians and red meat eaters alike) seem to enjoy the little cow facts I can throw out here and there. The only downside is that it has sketches, but no photos. It would be much better with color photos, but it's still an easy and fun read.
I bought this book because I've always had a "thing" for cows. My kitchen used to be decorated in cows. I'm one of those people that used to yell "MOOOOO" out of car windows, every time I would pass a field of cows.This book isn't exactly what I thought it would be, but I still recommend it. I was hoping for pictures, but there are only hand drawn illustrations. The illustrations are good...but I really wished for color photographs.There are fun facts on every page, which I enjoy being able to spout off. There are charts in the back of the book about milk production and beef production. My pre-teen daughter found enough information in this book to do a report on cows, even thought it's thin...she also found it to be a fast read.I'd recommend this book to someone curious about cows. It's a good starting-off point.
Along with several other reviewers, I was disappointed with the black and white pictures in a book that is supposed to help you identify different breeds of cows. The rest of the book is superb. Each cow breed gets about a page and one half to strut its stuff. And the facts included throughout the book concerning different cow characteristics is worth the price of the book. Did you know that cows can smell odors four miles away? They can also hear much higher and lower pitched sounds than humans can. Also, despite the lack of color pictures, this is the most thorough book on cows I have found. Also the most interesting.
I bought this book shortly after it was published and thought it was both informative and entertaining. The only complaint that I had was that it was illustrated with sketches instead of photographs. It's not like there are no cows around to pose for portraits.Since then similar books with photographs have become available. Beautiful Cows and The Field Guide to Cattle have much better illustrations. The text in A Field Guide to Cows is still a good size to carry in the car and is more amusing.
I am your basic cow enthusiast- someone who just enjoys looking at them on a back-road commute to work. I bought this book to learn a little bit more about the cows I see every day. I am also a classroom teacher and I hoped to share some of the info I learned here with my students. The book is terrific, has great facts and info about each cow. The only drawback is that the pictures are not in color and are not even photographs- they are kind of a sketched drawing of each cow. However, this doesn't take away too much from the quality of the book.
i bought this from the children's section. I thought there would be simple descriptions and colored pictures. there are no actual pictures, just black and white drawings. a lot of good information, but I was buying it for my grandchild.
I bought this book for my girlfriend as a joke, but she had a lot of fun with it. It's nothing glorious or profound, it just briefly discusses the differences between breeds. For anyone who has driven rural roads thinking (or saying) "wow, look at all the cows" this book can be fun to skim through. Just a silly little book, really, but not every book needs to be serious ...
Wish it had photos instead of illustrations, but still a good book.
