Review

"Walter Mosley is back with a whole new character to love. . . . As gorgeous a novel as anything he's ever written. And with Joe King Oliver I'm betting, and hoping, he's given us a character we haven't see the last of."―Richard Lipez, Washington Post"Gritty . . . The plot soars . . . Few mystery writers can examine issues of race--how it divides and binds people--as clearly and unflinchingly as Walter Mosley."―Oline Cogdill, Associated Press"Great stuff . . . The vibrant characters and pulsating dialogue are primo Mosley."―Marilyn Stasio, New York Times Book Review"A wild ride that delivers hard-boiled satisfaction while toying with our prejudices and preconceptions . . . The darker and uglier the story gets, the more Joe King Oliver comes alive. . . . The journey is fun and joyful. . . . A fitting work for a world riddled with dark contradiction."―Steph Cha, Los Angeles Times"Remarkable . . . Walter Mosley's latest novel [is] all the more relevant in Black Lives Matter era."―Lloyd Sachs, Chicago Tribune"Down the River Unto the Sea is a well-constructed crime novel, urgent in its plotting and carefully observed in the behaviors and the voices of its supporting cast. Mosley makes it all look simple, creating in Joe King Oliver another fascinatingly flawed detective brimming with potential."―Michael Berry, San Francisco Chronicle"This is one of those books that leaves you a little breathless--not only while you're reading, but once the back cover's closed, too. For anyone who loves hard-bitten PI thrillers, reading Down the River unto the Sea couldn't be more right."―Teri Schlichenmeyer, Miami Times"Juicy"―NPR"Rekindles some of the remarkable energy that drove the early Rawlins novels. . . . Mosley writes with great power here about themes that have permeated his work: institutional racism, political corruption, and the ways that both of these issues affect not only society at large but also the inner lives of individual men and women. And he has created a new hero in Joe Oliver with the depth and vulnerability to sustain what readers will hope becomes a new series. . . . It's the perfect moment for Mosley to unveil an exciting new hero and a series set in the present and confronting the issues that drive today's headlines."―Booklist (starred review)"[An] excellent standalone . . . The novel's dedication--to Malcolm, Medgar, and Martin--underlines the difference that one man can make in the fight for justice."―Publishers Weekly (starred review)

Ex-cop Joe King Oliver was framed. After a brutal time in prison, he is now a private eye, taking on the case of a young man who was also framed. As Joe feels honor-bound to find the truth, he begins to see a connection to the same people who framed him. In a structure reminiscent of Rose Gold, he is referred from person to person in order to find the dirty cops. Along the way, he finds out a lot about himself from people whom he once arrested but respected his honesty. I found it hard to separate some of the characters, but this is a solid entry in noir fiction. As usual the novel is populated with colorful characters, particularly Melquarth Forth, a psychopath who owes Joe his life. One suspects this stand-alone might be the birth of a new series, along with Easy Rawlins, Leonid McGill, and Fearless Jones. While not on a par with Debbie Doesn’t Do It Anymore, a sequel could be.

This gritty story (translate: a little graphic) hooked me from the beginning. I'll read more of Mosley's works based on Down the River Unto the Sea.The characters are solid, with one exception that I'll mention later. The relationship between the protagonist and his daughter is EXCELLENT and relatable. The variety of quite a few characters—no mean feat to master so many and keep straight for the reader—is well chosen, and each depicted so clearly, that I never mixed them up. The writing is lean, so never did I bog down in the story. The one character that didn't ring true is Gladstone, and this is a ver minor criticism. I just never could figure out exactly what compelled him to "protect" his friend in the context of police corruption. (I'm trying not to give too much away here.) The author doesn't share with the reader any underlying commitment between the men, and I'm at the point in life where I seldom assume anyone does anything out of only the goodness of his or her heart, or brotherly comaraderie, in the vast majority of cases.Down the River Unto the Sea is a very fulfilling, fairly quick read. Highly recommended for readers of crime and police thriller.

Mosley is that good friend you can count on to come pick you up and take your out to a cool dive bar near by that you didn't know about. This bar wasn't quite as good as most to which he's taken me. I always burn through his books and I'm happy to ride along on the trip he's planned. Perhaps I have read too many of them or I read too fast because there were a lot of characters and names. At the same time, they were "counters" (like bears in a John Irving book) that I'd met many times before. The spunky, street smart daughter. The Ex who never got over the protagonist. A supernaturally capable sociopath who managed to curb his urges in honor of his friendship. The white version of that friend who was not to be completely trusted. It was like I was a bit buzzed and walking around in my own neighborhood. I wasn't actually lost but couldn't find my home. Walter, I'll read another, but please go somewhere new. It's fun to hang out with you but I know your old stories.

Mosley creates a new likeable character in his latest novel. Joe King Oliver was one of NYPD's best investigators. He is framed for a crime and sent to prison. Upon his release, he becomes a private investigator. Haunted by his imprisonment and clueless as to who framed, he takes life day by day. The one sure thing in Joe's life is his love for his daughter, Aja-Denise, and her love for him. When Joe takes the case of a black radical journalist, he realizes that solving this case may answer some of his questions about his frame and subsequent imprisonment.

Although the character is changed, this was in the spirit of the Easy Rawlins books. I found the plot to be fun and intricate, so intricate however that several times I had to go back to check a name.

My first Mosley book. Very well written, it evokes the writings of Chandler or Hammett in modern NY and with an African American voice. The characters and writing kept me reading - but I thought the plot left little to be desired - a conspiracy so big everyone except the hero was in on it and in the end seemed to have no real purpose.

I always read Walter Mosley's books in a day or two and this was no exception, so that defines them as page-turners. This was another compelling story and I learned about the Bianchina, which I've actually seen here in L. A. I also learned about the origins of Melquarth. From the very first Mosley book I read over two decades ago, A Red Death, until now, I remain a loyal fan. Mr. Mosley and I share the same L. A. native, biracial heritage and his books speak to a part of me that no other writer can.

Nonstop reading. Had to backup a couple of times to be sure I read what I read, but in all very good. I could actually feel the time in solitary confinement and the fear of being put back in that place. I think Mel is the replacement of Moose in the Easy Rawlings novels. Evil but kind of good. Worth buying. I wonder what happened to The massage lady and Willa.
