Icons in Time offers a perspective on Icons in Christianity from a neo-modernist, rather than postmodernist, perspective on art. Thus, the author believes that good artistic works have a unique individuality that is over and above the individuality of the artist. Artworks cannot be reduced to the social conditions of the time, nor can Icons be reduced to particular theological interpretations that are unrelated to the aesthetic properties of the work such as use of line, color, and so forth. The author compares Christian Icons to Chinese art and notes some interesting similarities and differences. I highly recommend this book to scholars and educated lay readers who are interested in Christian Icons.
I love this book. It's dense but filled with so many new insights and motivations for this iconographer/artist. I'm probably only getting 66% of what Tsakiridou is communicating, but that missing third keeps me engaged. I'm only 20% through my Kindle version. I have so much to look forward to.
