I have never read a Lorraine Snelling book I didn't like, and her characters and stories stay on my mind well after I read the last page. I began this series back with the Red River of the North books, and since then I have laughed, grieved, smiled, and been charmed as the remote Blessing community grows.Ellis and Andrew were introduced in books past, two adorable little ones who are finally getting married, just like they and everyone else expected. But as the date approaches, more than only the bride and groom have reservations, and wise advice to put the wedding off a few weeks is accepted.Will the changes in gentle Andrew's personality push Ellie away? Was it foolish to believe you can find your true love before being old enough to attend school? A barn and home go up, but will there ever be newlyweds in residence?But, is an arsonist among them? One unidentifiable charred body brings the Marshall to town; is a killer among them? Will this be the last suspicious fire, or will the next one set kill a beloved community member,?
Kellie left her family to go to Blessing to marry Andrew. When she arrived she was told that the wedding would be postponed. Andrew's father didn't tell him why, just that they couldn't get married yet. Andrew became very upset with his father because it meant that him and Ellie couldn't start their life. It wasn't just his father, the barn had to raised and the home he ordered from Sears hadn't arrived. When the house finally came it was not the one she wanted but Andrew told him she would love it. When the barn was done Ellie moved her chickens that were gifts to the barn. The house was built and Ellie and her female friends were having a "girls only" party. During the party they smelled smoke and t g barn burned down. Pelletier to save her chickens and was injured. While she was recovering Andrew ran into Toby, someone he did not get along with since childhood He attacked Toby and almost killed him. Andrew was arrested and had to wait to see if Toby would recover. Did Toby get better? Did Andrew get of jail and did he marry Ellie? I think you'll enjoy this book to find out the answers.
"A Promise for Ellie" was not my first Lauraine Snelling book, nor do I believe it to be my last!In this book of life experiences, and trails of faith Ellie and Andrew must do some growing up before getting married. I did at times feel that placement of conversations, or writing could of been worded better, or put into the story better, I still followed the journey of the story, and loved that this book restored, and reminded me of my love for God, and reminded me that while life doesn't always go your way and things do happen, God is there to help you through the sorrow, and lead you to become the person He created you to be. It also was refreshing to read a book that didn't involve sex, or ravishing bodies. The transformation of a bad kid at school growing up, transforming to being a decent guy in life was also a nice treat to find. Some of the trails Ellie went through, and thoughts she had have not been much different from some in my life. Such as the disappointment when Andrew buys something for them, that wasn't what they had agreed upon, unable to change the outcome, she learns to actually love what he picked out, and turn over her discontentment to God.I look forward to reading more Lauraine Snelling books, whose storylines have yet to disappoint me. I hope you will take a chance on this book, and go on this journey with Ellie and Andrew.
These families of Blessing North Dakota have captured me in such a way that I feel like a part of these dear people.After reading each story I can't wait to get started on the next since the lives of each character intertwines with everyone in Blessing. Promise for Elle is the story of love, life, and plans for her future with Andrew Bjorklund at the turn of the century.I admire the work ethic and sacrifices portrayed in these series. I cry when a baby is lost, a beloved member of this community passes away, or old age comes to take someone home. Reality in it's truest sense. God fearing people who help each other at all times.Lauraine Snelling has done her utmost to give readers an inside look from that time period, starting in Norway with the early Immigrants sailing to America who settle in North Dakota in the early 1800's. Following the lives of the Bjorklund's is one amazing journey.If you like Historical novels I'm certain you will fall in love with the Bjorklund heritage.
I get discouraged with the mediocre writing in most Christian fiction, so I was hoping this established author (50 books) and this reputable publisher would offer something better. But it was "business as usual" as far as this genre goes: shallow characters who you barely care about, over-the-top preachiness and unresolved plot points. And don't get me started on the clumsy metaphors: "The thought of not seeing Andrew for several months made her toes clinch," and "the silence in the room quivered like an over-used muscle." Both of these images left my scratching my head in wonder. How can editors let this stuff go by?
I really like this story. It is clean, no sexual implications, so offensive language. I like how Andrew thought he was all grown up, thinking he knew what was best & how he had to learn patience, consideration for others, and how dangerous a temper can be. It was nice to see him mature. Ellie was very level-headed, but she had to learn patience as well, especially in waiting for Andrew to deal with all his problems.This story showed families dealing with severe obstacles and learning how to deal with them & be supportive of one another. Very refreshing.
Smelling did it again. From the first paragraph I enjoyed this story. It was a wonderful example of how God gets our attention when He needs to produce growth in our life. Andrew had a problem with anger and God brought him to repentance by confining Andrew for a period of time for spiritual growth to take place. All the while the tender romance between Andrew and Ellie grows ever deeper.
