What I like best about the classic edition of Runequest is how it models a person; it feels as real as fantasy setting can offer, and then the setting becomes that much more believable. The supplements - still available if you know where to look - focus on expanding your fantasy worlds, often by detailing cults for players and their enemies. There isn't the predictable marketing strategy of releasing new books with inevitably more powerful player "classes." I don't like this recent strategy of harnessing the egos of all the power gamers in the world to drive sales. It turns games into ugly arms races between players all trying to become the dominant force in the narrative.Mr. Baus is the author of Son of Sloan
Runequest 2nd edition was my introduction to "realistic" fantasy roleplaying and remains a favorite. The percentile mechanic often referred to as D100, is intuitive and easy to understand even for first time players. There are no classes for characters, so class restrictions don't apply. Any character can learn magic and even monster races can be characters. The default setting for the 2nd edition is Glorantha, an imaginary bronze age world of myth and heroics unequaled by any fantasy world I have read about since. Runequest doesn't use levels for character advancement. Characters improve by using the skills and abilities they want to improve in. The system developed for Runequest has come to be known as the BRP or Basic Role-Playing system and has been modified for use in Call of Cthulhu and other role-playing games.
Runequest, now in it's 6th edition, has always been an innovative role-playing system. The 2nd edition was my introduction to the rules. Living in America, my original copy had a different box and cover art. This is the Games Workshop edition marketed overseas. The rules and other items that come in the box set are the same as the American version. The game is set in the world of Glorantha, one of the classic role-play game settings. The later editions were less tied to Glorantha as a setting. Runequest 2nd edition is a d100, skill based system that departed from the 1st fantasy role-playing game by doing away with character classes and allowing any character to use magic. Character advancement is based on using skills and training to improve. The system still stands up well even though the 1st edition dates to 1978.
A lot of the rules seem arbitrary and needlessly complicated, but it does have interesting flavor, especially if you prefer a Grecco/Roman, low fantasy setting
Book has enough content, though straight to the point and no fluff.
This is a really cute cool part of gaming history, my only problem was getting two damaged copies in a row before I finally received one that was okay.
Great classic rpg.
Played in back in 1978. One of the best rpg's around.
