Obviously written by an American unfamiliar with British titles or ways ofspeaking.Item 1. A baron would not be “of†a whole county. His daughter would not be “Lady “ Cecelia; in ordinary speech, she would just be Miss Cecelia. When writing to her, she would be addressed as “The Honorable (Hon.) so and so.Item 2. Would a Brit use the War of Independence or of 1812 as a reference? Better use Waterloo, three years after the War of 1812 which was just blip in the Napoleonic Wars.The grandfather who supposedly fought in the War of 1812 must have been incredibly long lived. I am assuming that William Crawford is about 30 in 1915.How much would Brits know about different American Indian tribes?Would people in 1915-1918 talk about “comfort zone�All these inaccuracies are regrettable in a book that seeks to paint a realistic picture of the experience of WWI for both women volunteers and men.
This debut book had me turning the pages! The characters were strong and interesting and so much fun! I love characters with a lot of personality and flair. The action in this book kept me wanting more until the very end. It was detailed and a war book, so it may not be for everyone, but I think it was very nicely done. While the style was different than Ms. Sundin's, I would say the engaging way Ms. Ciesielski included real history is comparable to Sarah Sundin's WWII books. I really enjoyed this book and can't wait for more books by this author!

I absolutely adored this book! Gwyn is very much a strong woman in a world going mad. She spends her time dreaming of the adventures that lie outside her life in the apartment over the garage, where she and her father work fixing cars for a well to do family. Her best friend, Cecelia, is the daughter of her employer, and she continues to attempt to tame Gwyn's taste for adventure. Cecelia hopes Gwyn will give up her grease monkey ways to live a more cultured life, much to Gwyn's distaste. Gwyn has bigger dreams than settling down, and she's not afraid to go after them.As World War II continues to move ever closer to their normal existence, Gwyn and Cecelia find themselves learning about nursing and how they can help the war effort. While Cecelia is content rolling bandages or providing comfort to the wounded soldiers (one who might make a suitable husband, perhaps?), Gwyn is intrigued by the idea of ambulance drivers. She has the automobile knowledge and longs to use it in a way that's helpful to the cause. As the story progresses, we see two very different women with views of how they can use what they know to change history, one more than the other, but still both choices are valuable. Add in a handsome Captain William, whom both women end up falling for, battle scenes that put you in the middle of WWII and a POW situation, and you have the recipe for an addictive read.I laughed, cried, felt frustration and fear...I pretty much felt 'all the feels' with this one. I am already waiting to read J'nell's next book, (Iron Shepherd) but it doesn't come out until next year. :(Gwyn is a strong woman, undeterred by challenges, and I appreciated her drive and commitment to doing what's right, even in the face of danger.For this to have been J'nell's first novel, I expect the book to come will be just as good. I caught this one on sale on Kindle and am so happy I purchased it, and I plan on asking for the hard copy for Christmas. I chose to review because I think this is a book that is well researched, easy to read and because I love the attention to detail J'nell put into this story. I learned things I never knew had happened, which caused me to research, too. I count that as a sign of a well done read. Well done, J'nell and Smitten Historical Romances!
Oh, Gwyn, a young girl born a century too late! But luckily there were people during WWI who appreciated her spunk, her "drive" (that's funny, but you have to read the book to appreciate it), her wisdom to defy traditions. And Cecilia, who I absolutely adored as I am a sucker for characters who change over the course of a book. She went from "I just want to look pretty" to "I can help in my own way" for the war. Handsome soldiers who are stuck in the rut of family tradition, to comedic relief of Roland. Among the Poppies is sure to touch everyone's lives with the characters and the theme of duty verses desire. Gwyn wants to help on the front of the War, but her love interest, Captain Crawford isn't having it. They both are stubborn, trying to do the right thing. Who will win, and who will not- that is for the reader to find out.
