Amazon.com Review

Bounty hunter Stephanie Plum's got a lot on her mind. How does cigarette smuggler Eddie DeChooch, a fugitive so geriatric that even the hot-to-trot Grandma Mazur won't go out with him a third time, keep giving her the slip? How did a woman who died of a heart attack end up in DeChooch's garden shed with five bullet holes in her chest? Who stole a rump roast from Dougie and Mooner, the two lovable potheads who have decided to be crime fighters in Spandex bodysuits? Can Stephanie's perfect sister Valerie make it as a lesbian single mother without driving her family crazy? And--oh yeah--what should Stephanie do about that damn wedding dress on hold at Tina's Bridal Shoppe, waiting for her to decide whether vice cop Joe Morelli's really the one for her? I did look good in the gown. I looked like Scarlett O' Hara getting ready for a big wedding at Tara. I moved around a little to simulate dancing. "Jump up and down so we can see how it'll look when you do the bunny hop," Grandma said. "It's pretty but I don't want a gown," I said. "I can order one in her size at no obligation," Tina said. "No obligation," Grandma said. "You can't beat that." "As long as there's no obligation," my mother said. I needed chocolate. A lot of chocolate. "Oh gee," I said, "look at the time. I need to go." To complicate matters further, Stephanie's made a reluctant deal with the devil: if she can't bring in DeChooch by herself, her sexy but dangerous cohort Ranger is willing to help--for a price that a girl who's not-exactly-engaged is uncertain whether she should pay. But when Dougie and Mooner disappear, Grandma is kidnapped, and a crazy widow starts taking pot shots, no one who hides her .38 in a cookie jar is going to turn down a little friendly assistance. In Seven Up, Janet Evanovich serves up her usual bubbly fare: a totaled car, raucous viewings at Stiva's Funeral Parlor, buffoonish bad guys, and down-and-dirty mud wrestling, all stirred up with some snappy Jersey repartee and a few tart, new twists that will keep her fans impatient. Heaven can't wait for number eight. --Barrie Trinkle

From Publishers Weekly

It's always a treat to go out on a case with Stephanie Plum, the sassy, adventurous, but not always successful Trenton, N.J., bounty hunter. In her seventh outing (after 2000's Hot Six), Stephanie's employer, her bailbondsman cousin, Vinnie, gives her an easy job: pick up vicious senior citizen Eddie DeChooch, who is constantly sighted racing around Trenton in a borrowed white Cadillac, but whom no one can grab. The usual characters inhabit the novel: Steph's former high school buddies, the zonked-out Dougie and Mooner; and Evanovich's best creation, feisty Grandma Mazur. Stephanie's much-resented sister Valerie returns from California with her two daughters, her "perfect" marriage ended, and moves in with her parents, to their dismay. At times the plot meanders: Stephanie and pal Lula spend too much time running from house to house in the inbred Burg neighborhood, while two semi-retired crooks looking for DeChooch keep breaking into her apartment for little reason. All in all this is another zesty Evanovich read, but one that doesn't quite hit the high marks of her last two. Copyright 2001 Cahners Business Information, Inc.

I loved this book. The Stephanie Plum character is hilarious. It is hard to make me laugh that hard but this book truly does. Plum is a bounty huner from the burg who works for her cousin Vinnie. He owns a bale bonds in Trenton New Jersey. Word gets around that a seventy year old retired mobster by the name of Eddie DeCooch can out run her even though he has cataracts, loss of hearing and a bad prostrate. It is Plums job to bring him in to set a new court date since he skipped his first one. His charge is trafficking contraband cigarettes. Not such an easy job, it turns out, since DeCooch has learned a lot of tricks over the years and isn't afraid to use his gun. Although, because he is pretty blind from his cataracts the bullets fly in crazy directions. Plum finds a dead woman in DeCooch's shed when she trys to track him down. She also has two friends from high school that are stoned most of the time and Mooner's brain is pretty fried from the drugs. Plum learns one one of her friens Doogie is missing and is somehow connected to DeCooch. All the twists and turns makes this book well worth the reading.

Well, I thought about this a couple of times... How to review a book I loved. Okay, I loved the book in Hardcover. Stephanie is evolving and her life is it's usual topsy turvy roller coaster. The tension is great between Stephanie, Ranger and Joe Morelli. Maybe the story is typical in the sense that Stephanie is searching for someone she can't find so easily and bumbles around trying to catch the guy, so what, I love her for it. Janet writes them well enough that like it or not I can imagine myself there in the scene as it is happening. However, this AUDIO VERSION with TANYA EBY was a pitiful audio production of a book that deserved much more from an audio performance. Tanya Eby's performance took so much away from this book. Janet Evanovich's previous books have been read by a variety of readers from Lori Petty (abridged), Debi Mazar (abridged), Lorelie King(unabridged) and CJ Critt (unabridged through Recordedbooks.com). Out of the three CJ CRITT is fantastic and has my vote for any future performances of the Stephanie Plum series. I can not say enough about how disappointed I was in Tanya Eby's performance of this book, but don't let that stop you from reading this book because the series is a great deal of fun and SEVEN UP is one of my favorites and hopefully you'll enjoy it as well. I'll tell you I was so desperate to find out if I was in a nightmare in regards to the narrator I wrote the Brilliance Audio who produced the book. The answer I got from them was that No they weren't going to re-record the book that unlike me many people enjoyed the audio version. Not me my ears were bleeding afterwards. I wish as fans we had some say in who recorded the books CJ would be my choice, but anyone other than Tanya Eby would be a step up. It only proves that these companies no longer care about the quality, but how fast they can get it out and sold. I'd rather wait for Recorded Books quality version than the poor substitute I was sold.

While this series continues to be witty and amusing, some of the novelty has worn off the bumbling bounty hunter, and you wonder if she's ever going to learn how to deal with her daily life, her job, her romantic life and her family. As usual, her cousin Vinnie gives her an assignment that looks easy, but ends up being a lot more trouble than Stephanie anticipates. As usual, she and Joe Morelli are great together until the M word comes up. As usual, she doesn't know how she feels about Ranger.Predictably, she stumbles across a dead body, her car is damaged, and everybody wanders in and out of her apartment at will. By now you know that her mother will be hearing wedding bells, and that her grandmother will be shocking the living daylights out of Stephanie's mom and dad. Her gun is still safe and sound in the cookie jar.Joyce, Lula, Dougie, Mooner and Connie are all there, but then the twists kick in. Stephanie's sister comes a' calling with some bad news and a lifestyle change, the dead body was already that way before the bullets hit home, Grandma Mazur is deeply involved in the case, and Stephanie learns the dangers of being heartless in New Jersey after Dougie and Mooner disappear. Then there are two things to stir any male reader's heart - a Harley and female mud wrestling! It's the little details that make the story, and this one is nicely garnished.Amanda Richards, May 5, 2005
