About the Author

Kenneth H. Phillips, Professor Emeritus at The University of Iowa, is a graduate of Westminster College (BM), West Virginia University (MM), and Kent State University (Ph.D.). An award-winning researcher and teacher, Dr. Phillips is the author of four books--TEACHING KIDS TO SING (Cengage), BASIC TECHNIQUES OF CONDUCTING (Oxford University Press), DIRECTING THE CHORAL MUSIC PROGRAM (OUP), and EXPLORING RESEARCH IN MUSIC EDUCATION AND MUSIC THERAPY (OUP)--as well as more than 100 reviews, chapters, and professional journal articles. Professor Phillips has been honored with three outstanding teaching awards from The University of Iowa and is recognized by the National Association for Music Education as one of the nation's most accomplished music educators. A recipient of the Robert M. McCowen Memorial Award for Outstanding Contribution to Choral Music, he holds the Distinguished Music Alumni Award from Kent State University and serves as an honorary board member of the Lowell Mason Foundation. Dr. Phillips has presented workshops throughout the United States and in Australia, Canada, China, and New Zealand.

On the one hand, Phillips' standard choral methods text is nicely organized, methodical, and gives a nice basic overview of many of the major concerns of the high school choral director. From a musical and pedagogical perspective, it is very sound. On the other, however, it reads and feels as though it was written in the early 1990's or so by a fairly old-school director, one who was still managing a very successful choral program in much the same way as he had over several decades, without changing much. There is little mention of many of the resources and issues faced in real-life school situations today--the most glaring being the internet/email/cell phone reality of our students' lives. Admittedly, this is not entirely Phillips' fault--in 2004 when the book was published things were simpler than 2013, but for Heaven's sake, even then there was email, and there were websites, even if social media had not emerged as the societal force it is now. Musically, old-school techniques may continue to work; however, in addressing issues of recruiting, communication, fundraising, etc, the models presented in this book are stuck in the last century and will be of limited use. Some mention of --or at least awareness of--the realities of students with special needs, gender issues, and other real-life forced which affect our students and thus our programs would be helpful as well.I would not recommend this as a book for 21st century music educators, especially young ones starting out. It perpetuates a model for high school choral programs which, while it might have been absolutely rock-solid in its time (although I personally think "its time" was about ten years before it was published), is sadly outdated.

This is the first book I look back on when I need a reference for anything for my choir program.

This publication makes an excellent textbook for my Secondary Choral Methods students. It is an practical and outstanding resource for the collegiate undergrad Music Ed student.
