Julie Freed writes a powerful book on the after affects of Katrina and the dissolve of her marriage. Several days before Katrina, Julie receives an email from her husband more or less asking for a divorce. They have a young daughter and a hurricane is brewing. She is in the midst of trying to pack and get out of harm's way while dealing with the crippling worry over her marriage. The book goes back and forth between present day and how she met her husband and eventually married. I read this book from beginning to end. It is captivating and devastating in more ways than one. You certainly will be pulling for Julie and her daughter and wondering how a man could have so little concern over his family during a very traumatic weather event.
This is a captivating true story told from the author’s personal experiences through the horrid tragedy that was Hurricane Katrina. Julie Freed captivates her audience by using non-linear writing techniques and tying back to the same common objects which the whole story revolves around. She breaks the book up into sections which helps define the true meaning and purpose of each of her paragraphs. She does not include any useless information, and she is sure to openly express her true thoughts, feelings, and events, despite the tragedy of it all. An author who is willing to open up so freely about their life, and put it on paper for all the world to see is brave, and should be recognized. Many people would not have the audacity to share such intimate details of their life, but Julie Freed wanted the world to know. This made me gain interest in her as an author, and never put her book down. I highly recommend this book to anyone even slightly considering reading this. You will become emotionally attached, captivated, and engrossed by the tragedy that Freed lived with of course a happy ending to it all.
The author penned an exciting and emotional story of her layered experience of the simultaneous devastation of Hurricane Katrina and her divorce from her spouse of 7 years. This review is directed at those who are interested in purchasing the AUDIBLE version.The author is the narrator, and delivers a power packed story -- in a flat monotone voice. It is "her" story though, so I can see why she may have chosen not to hire a voice actor to do the narration. As an audiobook purchaser however, be aware that this is NOT like listening to the animated, emotional voice of an experienced actor. What you will hear is someone reading the manuscript. It is a different experience, and one that left me feeling dissatisfied overall, so I did take off one star for that.That being said, I did enjoy the writing style and pacing. The author is a PhD mathematician and is an excellent writer. You won't be sorry that you READ this story........ but you might be sorry if you LISTEN to it. Do yourself a favor, and savor it by reading it and letting your imagination fill in the powerful emotion she writes about. Audiobook fans love the actors voices and it can make or break the experience of the book. I strongly recommend you experience it in print. At the very least, listen to the sample before purchasing from Audible.
If you are interested in learning more about Hurricane Katrina, this is not the book for you. If you want to read about one divorce, stick with it. I read so many enthusiastic reviews that I felt interested in this book. I was totally disappointed. I thought I would be reading about the experiences lived in Katrina, the shattering effects, the preventive signals, the preparation for it, the dramatic results, the role of authorities, health services, emergency services, and even the consequences for the country as a whole. But the author uses this book mainly to speak about her painful divorce (predictable by their relationship before getting married), which is of no interest but to her closest circle. I think that for an experience to generate interest in others, it must stem from the person's microcosms and be transferred to the broader community, so that it may have an effect on its readers. I seldom leave a book unfinished, but no matter how much I tried, I had to give up.
I'm very sorry to say, but being from the Mississippi Gulfport Coast and experiencing the wrath of Hurricane Katrina. I felt the author of this book had it way better than most. She spent so much time on how often she and her ex-husband had sex, and his other addictions, I kept wondering when she was going to get to the meat of what it was like to have gone through a Hurricane of that caliber. But this is just my opinion and that doesn't mean that other people will appreciate reading something that should have been left in their personal journal.
I read this unsure of what it would be. It is so moving. The story of living through Katrina and losing everything so u 's be amazing. But the author not only has to rebuild her home and life, but has her husband leave her via email days before the hurricane. Wow. She persevered.
I So enjoyed the read! It was refreshingly honest, open and heartfelt! The book was a great recap of a devastating event, coupled with so many other issues to handle at the same time. I would definitely recommend the book!
A thoughtful and transparent account of a woman’s life suddenly changed after the tragedy of Hurricane Katrina and a husband’s decision to walk away from their marriage and daughter. This book brought out so many emotions as I read. I love her determination and willingness to do whatever it takes to make a new life for her and her daughter. I highly recommend this...just don’t start at 11pm like I did...you’ll be up til nearly 2am finishing it!!
