Review

Our Heaven Baby is full of whimsy and wonder while taking seriously the heartbreak of miscarriage. Told from the perspective of five year old Abel, this story takes the reader from learning that Abel's mommy is going to have a baby, to learning the baby died, and then imagining what it might be like in heaven, where the baby now resides and will one day be reunited with his family. The illustrations are beautiful and the books is easy for children to understand and engage with. The author, Leah Vis, draws on the true story of her own miscarriage and gives us a window into how she and her family experienced the loss. Simply stated: I love this book. It's not only an excellent resource for helping children process loss, but it also touches the hearts of its adult readers; reminding us there is hope in the midst of great suffering and reminding us of the freedom we can experience when we view our circumstances with a child-like perspective. --Stephanie Risinger, Holistic Fertility and Wellness PodcastMiscarriage is an incredibly difficult subject, yet OUR HEAVEN BABY not only explains that subject to children in terms that they can understand but does so with an incredibly gentle and uplifting message. Told from the perspective of big‐brother Abel, the story strikes an honest yet positive tone as the boy tells the reader about the special baby in his mommy's belly, his plans to teach his brother how to be a kid, and then, upon hearing the baby has gone to Heaven, his dreams about what it is like there. Aeron Brown's stunningly imaginative illustrations enhance Vis's text and make the reader's heart soar right along with Abel's. Readers of all ages will love the cheerful images of Heaven and the touch of humor in Brown's spreads. It is my hope that this book helps families struggling with miscarriage to find reassurance, peace, and healing. --Pam Glauber, Freelance Children's Book EditorI don't take it lightly having a healthy pregnancy. I've seen far too many sick premie babies when working in the hospital, heard too many stories about early and late miscarriages and have known those who've experienced stillbirth. These things have happened to our fellow mankind, and I think they need to be openly talked about so we can cry with one another, carry each other and offer love and hope. I have yet to encounter a picture book that so authentically addresses saying goodbye and dealing with the loss of an expectant baby from a child's perspective. I have yet to encounter a picture book that uses both stunning pictures and accessible, written word to help our Littles understand and deal with the loss of their expectant brother and or sister—that is, until I got my hands on Leah Vis and Aeron Brown's OUR HEAVEN BABY. This book is such a gift to the world of children's literature. It's a book that needed to be written and to be handled with the greatest of care, and I can tell you a thousand times over—it has been. --Meg Raby, Bedtime Stories Forevermore

Our Heaven Baby is full of whimsy and wonder while taking seriously the heartbreak of miscarriage. Wonderful book with really beautiful illustrations that imaginatively helps little ones with big questions. The story may be about a family that has experienced miscarriage, but it is definitely a great read for children of all ages, whether your family has personally experienced miscarriage or not.I am amazed that a picture book can so delicately and delightfully approach such a large topic. A must have for your bookshelf, especially true for children that have already experienced a loss.

So, when I began reading this, I expected it to perhaps be a little corny. I definitely was skeptical of a children's picture book bringing hope or addressing the issue of miscarriages. But man, it was actually really well done. It was whimsical and really had a sense of wonder and hope to it. The artwork was great and really carried that imaginative whimsical-hopey atmosphere.Emotional, lovely, really well done.

What a blessing this book is for so many people who have babies in heaven! Such a real discussion of the pain, joy, faith, trust and family dynamic for anyone who has experienced a loss or knows someone who has. This book is for everyone! Especially in a day where the life of unborn isn’t always rejoiced or celebrated. Read this book to understand Gods creation and purpose for every unborn baby even those he calls home before birth.

I love how the focus is on the hope of Jesus and the joy of heaven. I also appreciated that the author didn't say the baby was an angel, but made a very clear distinction between the people in heaven and the angels.

The first time I read this book I cried. Leah does an amazing job capturing the sadness of loss, a child's imagination and carefree joy, and the wonderful promise of eternal life in heaven that we have through Christ. Just looking at the incredible pictures leaves me with an even greater hunger for the day that we get to see Jesus face to face. This is a wonderful book for anyone experiencing any kind of loss, so far I have given it to two friends, one on the anniversary of her baby daughter going to heaven and the other who just experienced a miscarriage, and both were very blessed by it. Thank you!

This book will provide you with a wonderful, Christ-focused way to talk about this difficult subject with your kids. The text and illustrations truly take you into the presence of Jesus in Heaven, and will provide great comfort, peace and joy to kids and parents alike.Having not known about my parents’ miscarriages until I was far into adult life, I’m sure they would have loved to have a beautiful book like this to talk about it with me. Highly recommended for your own use, your church bookstore or resource center, your Christian school’s library or even a pastoral or counselor resource.

This is a beautiful book with amazing illustrations. This book tugs at your heartstrings while discussing such an important, yet delicate situation that happens in families all the time. So happy there is a book like this in the world.
