I first became enthralled with the author's life in the book "An American Teacher in Taiwan". I purchased the first book to learn more about ESL teaching overseas but instantly became more invested with the author's highly detailed, personal storyline. With "From Taiwan to Texas: Life in Mid-America", the trend of frank honesty concerning personal matters continues. It was a satisfying read for someone who had become invested in learning the outcome to the author's life in Taiwan. If you enjoyed the first book and were interested in learning how things worked out, I encourage you to get this book.
Here's a California boy who is about as far away from being a stoned surfer dude as he can get. He's married to a Taiwanese woman who had to be persuaded to move to the U.S. and who is "the bluntest woman I know." They are Gen Xer's, but they recognize that life is uncertain and they buy a house that's much more modest than they can afford and have savings. There is nothing not to like about these people. I got really interested in them (and their families) in his first book - "An American Teacher in Taiwan." I was not disappointed in this follow-up. Very worthwhile reading.
I moved from Taiwan to Texas about 10 years ago. So I when I stumbled upon this title, it piqued my interest, since I have both places to relate to. However, after finishing this short book composed of blogs, I found this book to be unbearable. Despite his 4 and a half years in Taiwan, the author appreciated nothing about Taiwan. His descriptions of the island country are full of misinformation, prejudice, and sometimes pure unkindness. I don't know if the author made any Taiwanese friends when he was there. But if he did, he should definitely send a copy of this book to each of them to let them know how he feels about their country. Don't waste your money on this book.
